Missing Money – Websites to Search
Please do take a few minutes to watch the video, the process is explained in detail. The complete process and my story of recovering assets and money is documented below.
My father passed away in 2006, the day after the Super Bowl was hosted in Detroit. He was a mysterious person and kind of a loner.
After the grieving process and the services, our family was left with many unsolved problems including which required our family to put the pieces of the puzzle together. This included research finding documentation (paperwork) about his investments, bank accounts, life insurance, and other assets.
We managed to find some, but we also knew there were other assets that we had not found. THEN, sometime in 2014 I started to get mailers from attorneys, asset recovery specialists and other similar types of people. The mailers all had a similar message;
You are entitled to some recovered assets from your late father. Contact us and we will help you claim those recovered assets.
Okay, the very short version of this story, my father had an investment account (stocks) with AT&T that totaled about $13,000 that was unclaimed. We agreed to terms with a local attorney and paid him 30%, then split the remaining balance among 4 siblings (3 sisters and myself). The attorney took a larger piece of the unclaimed money than any one of us did!
I wish I knew now what I knew then! While I trusted and have a great relationship with the attorney that helped us recover the money, I do remember asking him how he got access to this information and WHY do I need to work with him to recover the assets. His answer, at that time, made me feel and believe that indeed I/we required legal assistance and expertise, I NOW KNOW THAT NOT TO BE TRUE – YOU CAN DO THIS YOURSELF.
The reason, as I understand it, that it required 7-8 years for the attorneys and asset recovery specialists to contact me is that there are a couple of factors;
During conversations with the attorney, I did ask;
Question-to-Attorney: Is it possible there are other assets or money available?
His answer; YES, THERE IS, BUT IT’S SMALL INSIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS THAT ARE NOT WORTH MY TIME. I USUALLY DO NOT GET INVOLVED UNLESS IT’S AT LEAST $10,000!
This struck me as a little bit “selfish” on his part, but I get it. The part that really disturbed me was when I asked how to find this information, he basically just said; “You can contact the state Treasury Department.” – THAT’S ALL HE OFFERED.
